Description

A superb antique Victorian inlaid rosewood drop leaf side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is of extremely fine quality, the rosewood has stunning grain patterns and absolutely beautiful inlays of satin wood. The drop leaf sides lift up and are held up by hinged supports to extend the surface area. There are two drawers with brass handles at the front, the back is also nicely finished so this can be used as a free standing item. The legs are beautifully turned and stand on brass casters.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent for its age.

Victorian rosewood furniture gained immense popularity during the 19th century, prized for its deep, rich grain and durability. Craftspeople frequently employed exotic imported woods like rosewood to create sophisticated pieces for formal parlours and drawing rooms.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames with rich rosewood veneers applied to stable secondary woods. Traditional construction methods include dovetail joints on drawers, hand-turned legs, and intricate marquetry or brass inlay.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails and minor signs of age in the wood and finish. Examination of the underside, drawer linings, and secondary woods often reveals historical manufacturing techniques distinct from modern reproductions.

Integrating antique wooden furniture into contemporary spaces adds texture, historical depth, and warmth. Placing the piece alongside minimalist seating or neutral backdrops allows the rich grain and delicate inlay to stand out as a focal point.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking and fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional high-quality beeswax to nourish the timber.
