Burr walnut gained immense popularity during the Victorian era due to its highly figured, swirling grain patterns, which were sliced into veneers and used by master cabinetmakers to showcase luxury and high-status craftsmanship on prominent furniture surfaces.

These pieces typically employ a secondary softwood or hardwood carcass overlaid with fine burr walnut veneer, embellished with intricate marquetry using contrasting woods like boxwood or fruitwood, and assembled with traditional joinery.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut nature of the marquetry inlay, irregularities in the grain structure indicating hand-veneering, hand-cut dovetails or screws appropriate to the period, and natural patina resulting from age.

An antique burr walnut table serves as a strong focal point in contemporary spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist seating or neutral upholstery to highlight the rich tones and complex grain patterns without visual competition.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate microcrystalline wax to protect the polished surface.
