Description

A super example of an early waywiser by Jonathan Sissons with a finely engraved center of the dial and a silvered readings dial, with the original hands.

The oak and mahogany case has a beautifully constructed wheel and elegant handle.

In original untouched condition.

Sissons worked on his own from 1722 to 1747, he was apprentice to George Graham the famous clockmaker, which explains the beautiful hands and fine engraving.

I think this is the only example of Sissons work we have been lucky to own.

Diameter of the wheel is 32"

Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

A waywiser, also known as a perambulator or land measuring wheel, is an early mechanical device used by surveyors, cartographers, and landowners to measure distances along the ground during the 17th and 18th centuries.

These instruments were typically constructed from seasoned hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring brass dials, graduated indicator hands, and occasionally iron-shod wheels for durability in the field.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate brass engraving, patination consistent with age, and mechanical gear systems driven directly by the rotation of the main wheel.

This piece can be displayed as a focal sculpture within a study or library, paired with architectural blueprints or vintage globes to emphasize an academic aesthetic.

Keep the item in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and dramatic fluctuations in humidity, treating the wood periodically with microcrystalline wax while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on brass components.
