FAQs

Gateleg tables gained popularity in seventeenth-century Britain during the Jacobean and Stuart periods, designed to provide a large surface area that could be folded away when not in use.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak, often joined using wooden pegs or mortise and tenon joints, featuring hinged flaps supported by pivoting legs.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate tool marks, timber shrinkage, hand-turned stretchers, patination consistent with age, and traditional joinery rather than modern fixings.

Pairing the dark timber with modern minimalist seating or placing it within a neutral-toned room creates a striking focal point that balances historical character with modern clean lines.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, avoiding silicone polishes, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
