Description

A smart and very well made antique Victorian mahogany leather top writing desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

The quality is superb, this is a lovely size and is finished on the back, so can be used as a free standing item. It stands on beautifully turned legs terminating in porcelain casters. The drawers have lovely turned mahogany handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. This has a beautiful inset green leather writing surface with tooled edges.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some historical wear and patina remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian writing desks typically feature rich wood grains, particularly mahogany or walnut, often combined with inset leather surfaces and turned or carved legs reflective of 19th-century craftsmanship.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid mahogany, oak, or walnut for the framework, incorporating secondary softwoods like pine for drawer linings, alongside hand-tooled leather inserts and brass hardware.

Authentication relies on examining hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, traditional timber shrinkage, hand-turned components, and the presence of period-appropriate fixings and lock mechanisms.

Positioning the desk as a focal point in a home study or living room allows the rich timber and coloured leather to contrast effectively against modern minimalist decor or traditional architectural backgrounds.

Preservation involves applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber finish and cleaning the leather with specialised saddle soap, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
