FAQs

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, small cast bronze animal figures and paperweights became popular desk accessories, often produced in European foundries for the export market.

These pieces were typically crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting method or sand casting, utilising copper alloys such as bronze or brass, followed by hand-finishing and patina application.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing, including consistent surface oxidisation, weight appropriate for solid metal, and tooling marks or casting seams consistent with period manufacturing techniques.

Such decorative objects work well placed on stackable books, wooden desks, or mantelpieces, adding a touch of historical character and tactile interest to contemporary spaces.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth and kept away from moisture and chemical cleaners to preserve the original historical patina.
