Scottish writing tables from the 18th and 19th centuries typically feature robust construction, local timbers such as mahogany or deal, and distinctive regional leg turnings or drawer configurations.

These tables were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, often incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction and solid timber secondary woods.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate hardware, and natural oxidisation within the interior drawer structures.

Pairing a warm wood writing table with modern seating creates a balanced study space, allowing the historic timber grain to act as a focal point against neutral walls.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying natural beeswax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
