Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Refectory tables originated in monasteries during the medieval period, where they were used by monks for communal dining in the refectory. Over subsequent centuries, the design transitioned into domestic settings, becoming a staple of large halls and country houses.

These tables are traditionally constructed from heavy local hardwoods, predominantly oak, utilising pegged mortise and tenon joints. Tops were often crafted from wide single boards or joined planks, supported by substantial turned legs and lower stretchers.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, extensive oxidisation, tool marks consistent with period hand-planes, and historical wear patterns. The presence of a single-piece top without modern laminate or steel brackets is also a key indicator.

Pairing a heavy timber table with minimalist or modern seating creates a striking juxtaposition of eras. The piece works effectively as a focal point in open-plan dining spaces, grounded by a simple natural fibre rug.

Maintain a stable room temperature and relative humidity to prevent wood splitting or warping. Clean surfaces with a dry or barely damp lint-free cloth and periodically apply traditional beeswax to nourish the timber.
