Flemish furniture from the Renaissance and Baroque periods is characterised by robust construction, heavy timber framing, and often architectural elements such as panelled bases and shaped supports.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid European oak, utilizing traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged frames, and hand-planed panels.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate tool marks, natural oxidisation and patina, shrinkage cracks in the timber, and hand-cut joinery rather than modern fasteners.

Balance the substantial visual weight of dark timber by pairing it with minimalist lighting, contemporary abstract art on the wall above, or simple ceramic vessels.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
