The Georgian style encompasses furniture produced during the reigns of the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover, spanning from 1714 to 1830. It is characterised by a transition from heavy, ornate designs to more refined, classical proportions influenced by Palladianism and cabinetmakers such as Thomas Chippendale.

Eighth-century English cabinetmakers predominantly utilised native timbers such as oak, elm, and walnut during the early decades, transitioning towards imported Cuban and Honduran mahogany as trade routes expanded. Secondary structural timbers often included pine or deal, while joinery relied on traditional hand-cut dovetails and wooden pins.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, construction methods, and oxidisation patterns. Genuine period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetailing, hand-wrought iron or brass fixings, and natural shrinkage cracks indicative of age.

Pairing historical timber pieces with modern minimalist seating or abstract art creates a balanced, layered aesthetic. The deep warmth of mahogany anchors neutral colour palettes and contrasts effectively against textured plastered walls or clean architectural lines.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain, avoiding silicone-based polishes that can degrade the historic finish.
