Description

A fine example of a Staffordshire figure depicting a leopard hunter on horseback. The figure is beautifully modelled with the horse rearing as the leopard attacks from below. The piece has really great decoration with the horse sponged to give a dappled coat and the leopard and undergrowth coloured in detail. This is a rare and desirable figure which was probably inspired by Astley’s circus. The whole is in good antique condition with some loses to the overglaze decoration particularly in the undergrowth. C.1870.

Staffordshire figures were mass-produced in the English potteries during the 19th century, primarily designed as decorative ornaments for the mantelpieces of the working and middle classes.

These pieces were typically slip-cast or hand-moulded in earthenware, finished with a tin or lead glaze, and hand-painted with vibrant enamel colours before being kiln-fired.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the crazing in the glaze, the weight and porosity of the earthenware body, hand-painted brushwork details, and the presence of ventilation holes underneath.

Display the figurine as a focal point on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or glass cabinet where its historical character and hand-painted details can be closely appreciated.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, dust gently with a dry, soft brush, and avoid using chemical cleaning agents or submerging the item in water.
