FAQs

A Sutherland table is a type of narrow drop-leaf table that folds down completely flat for compact storage, originating in the Victorian era during the mid-19th century.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, frequently featuring decorative veneers like burr walnut on the leaves, supported by turned legs and swing-out gatelegs.

Authentic pieces typically display period construction methods, including hand-cut dovetails where applicable, traditional timber shrinkage, genuine patination, and original brass or ceramic castors.

Positioned folded against a wall as a console or opened out in a living space, it provides functional surface area while introducing rich wood tones and historical texture to modern schemes.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
