Description

A fantastic original antique William IV mahogany writing table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840’s.

It is of amazing quality and is of lovely proportions. The top has three drawers with turned mahogany handles, and it sits on a very bold carved mahogany stretcher base. The legs and stretchers have wonderful twisted carving and the cabriole feet are beautifully scrolled. This has an inset gold tooled leather top and a lovely moulded edge. The back is also polished, so it looks just as great from the back.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with only some minor wear beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The William IV style spans the 1830s, bridging the Regency and early Victorian periods, characterised by robust proportions, classical revival motifs, and heavy use of premium timbers such as mahogany.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often incorporating turned or carved stretcher bases, brass castors, and inset leather writing surfaces with blind tooling.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, secondary timbers like oak or pine inside the drawers, and natural ageing characteristics such as oxidisation on the timber and hand-tooled leather.

Positioning a period writing table as a standalone console or pairing it with contemporary seating creates a striking contrast that highlights its historical craftsmanship within a modern room scheme.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and treating the leather insert with specialised leather balms to prevent cracking.
