19th Century Welsh Mahogany Occasional Table

19th century
Sold 20 June 2025 · Antique and Unique
This “19th Century Welsh Mahogany Occasional Table” found a buyer.

It was listed by Antique and Unique. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An unusual and charming small antique occasional table, with a circular base raised on four feet, a turned column and a beautifully figured top with scalloped edge. I believe this dates to the mid 19th century, and is probably Welsh.

A quirky little table with lots of character. The column is nicely turned and the top is made from a single piece of beautiful mahogany, the rounded outline giving it a flower like shape. The circular base has carved detail applied on a lathe, and a x-shaped brace underneath supporting the feet. There is something written in pencil on the underside of the base but unfortunately I can’t make it out.

Condition: The base and column both have old woodworm holes. There is no evidence that this is recent, but we have treated it against woodworm as a precaution. I suspect that the top has been re-finished at some point as it is lacking the patina I would expect, but it is a lovely piece of wood. The table has a small amount of movement due to the narrow structure, but it is totally useable and as long as it is standing on level surface is good and stable.

An occasional table from the 19th century is a small, versatile piece of furniture designed for specific, intermittent use in living spaces, such as holding a lamp, books, or decorative objects.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring hand-turned pedestals and joinery characteristic of the period.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, traditional construction methods like mortise and tenon joints, natural patina, and timber characteristics consistent with nineteenth-century cabinetmaking.

Such tables function effectively as accent pieces beside a sofa or in an empty corner, providing textural contrast when paired with modern minimalist seating or contemporary lighting.

Preserve the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural waxes.
