Edwardian desk accessories reflect the formal correspondence habits of the early 20th century, when opening daily mail was a ritual requiring specialised instruments crafted from materials such as horn, bone, silver, and ivory.

Traditional paper knives and letter openers were frequently fashioned from organic materials including animal horn, hoof, bone, tortoiseshell, and ivory, often paired with metal collars or turned wooden handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variations in grain, colour, and texture, along with age-related patina, hand-finished surfaces, and construction methods characteristic of early 20th-century craftsmanship rather than modern moulding.

This piece can be displayed on a home office desk, atop a stack of vintage books on a coffee table, or within a cabinet of curiosities to add textural contrast and historical character.

Preserve antique horn by keeping it away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity, occasionally treating the surface sparingly with mineral oil to prevent drying and cracking.
