Antique Davenport 'Chinoiserie Ruins' Blue and White Meat Drainer

19th century
Description

A rare 19th century blue and white pearlware meat drainer made by Davenport in the ‘Chinoiserie Ruins’ pattern c1820, bearing the Davenport pottery impressed anchor mark to the rear.

Meat drainers were made to sit into the recess at the bottom of a large meat plate to allow the juices to drain away from the joint of meat. They are highly collectible and look fantastic displayed either on a dresser or shelf, or arranged on a wall. This one was made by Davenport in around 1820 and is decorated with their beautiful Chinoiserie Ruins pattern.

Condition: The drainer has a restored crack in the upper right quarter. There are no other chips or cracks. The glaze is in good condition with no crazing.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A ceramic meat drainer is a perforated insert designed to rest inside a large oval serving platter. Popular in Georgian and Victorian dining, it allowed juices and grease from carved roasted meats to drain into the well below, keeping the food elevated and presentable.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead-glazed earthenware. The pattern was created by transferring a copperplate engraving onto thin paper using cobalt oxide pigment, which was then applied to the unglazed ceramic body before firing.

Authentic Davenport ceramics often feature impressed makers marks, such as an anchor motif or the name Davenport stamped on the underside. Additionally, early pieces display characteristic cobalt blue transfer-printed patterns with crisp detailing and distinctive hand-punched drainage holes.

A meat drainer can be styled vertically using a plate stand on a sideboard, mounted on a wall gallery display of transferware, or placed flat as a decorative tray for small tabletop objects.

Wash gently by hand using warm water and mild dish soap with a soft sponge, avoiding abrasive pads. Ensure the piece is thoroughly dried, and avoid soaking or using dishwashers, which can damage the glaze or cause crazing.
