Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Italian Florentine single wall shelf originates from the late 19th century and brings Victorian and Gothic design elements into the home. Forged from dark grey wrought iron, the piece displays a hand-forged finish with a dark patina across its metallic surfaces. The construction incorporates a pierced bulbous front, a castellated shelf, and an ornate pierced foliated backplate decorated with intricate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and a central decorative cartouche. Visible details include delicate petal-like cutouts along the top finial edge, floral rosette motifs on the lower sides, and dimensional curved metal scroll arms supporting the central platform. The shelf measures 48 cm high by 31 cm wide and 28 cm deep, providing a compact profile well-suited for display purposes. Ideal for placement on a narrow wall space in a hallway, study, or living room, this architectural antique functions as a decorative bracket shelf for holding small sculptural objects or candles.

FAQs

Florentine metalwork is distinguished by scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, and decorative forms derived from Italian Renaissance and Baroque traditions. Hand-forged iron pieces often featured elaborate repousse or cut-metal architectural details.

Craftsmen traditionally hand-forged wrought iron using heat, hammers, and anvils, joining components with mechanical rivets, collar wraps, or fire welding rather than modern electrical welds.

Authentic antique wrought iron displays subtle texture variations from hand-hammering, visible traditional joinery such as rivets or bands, and natural surface patination rather than uniform powder coatings.

Mounting a dark iron shelf against a light or textured neutral wall creates strong architectural contrast, serving as a display ledge for small ceramics, sculptures, or botanical elements.

Dust regularly with a soft brush or dry cloth, and apply a light coating of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface from ambient moisture and oxidisation.
