Delft tiles are tin-glazed earthenware tiles that originated in the Netherlands, primarily produced from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. They typically feature hand-painted cobalt blue iconography, including maritime vessels, windmills, landscapes, and biblically inspired figures.

Traditional Delft tiles were hand-moulded from clay, covered with an opaque lead-tin glaze, and decorated with metallic oxides, most commonly cobalt oxide for blue hues. A single high-temperature kiln firing fused the painted glaze into the ceramic surface.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples feature visible pinholes in the corners from wood moulding boards, uneven hand-cut edges, and a thick, slightly off-white tin glaze. Surface wear often reveals red or buff earthenware clay beneath damaged glaze along the edges.

These historical tiles can be mounted in display frames, integrated into contemporary fireplace surrounds, placed on decorative plate stands, or installed as accent tiles within kitchen or bathroom splashbacks.
