Delftware originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century, heavily inspired by imported Chinese porcelain. Potters utilised a tin glaze to achieve a brilliant white opaque surface, upon which intricate blue mineral pigments were hand-painted.

Authentic pieces are crafted from buff-coloured earthenware clay, coated with a tin oxide glaze, and fired in a kiln. The pigments typically consist of cobalt oxide, which reacts with the glaze during firing to produce varying tones of blue.

Authentication involves examining the potting weight, crazing in the tin glaze, minor kiln faults, and hand-painted brushwork details on both the front and unglazed foot rim. 18th-century pieces often exhibit age-appropriate wear and slight glaze fritting along the rim.

These decorative plates can be mounted on a wall using safe plate hangers as focal art pieces, or displayed upright on a sideboard or mantelpiece using a stable stand to introduce historical pattern and classic colour into a room.

Antique Delftware requires gentle handling and should be kept away from direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and fluctuating temperatures. Cleaning should be limited to dusting with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding any liquid immersion or abrasive cleaners.
