An Acheulian Flint Axe Head From Hilton, Near Derby

I have always been fascinated by Stone Age implements, especially when they carry some notation regarding where they were found - such as this Acheulian (or Acheulean) flint axe head, which was discovered in the Hilton area of Derby and owned by Doctor Arthur Court of Staveley at the beginning of the 20th Century (Photographs of Doctor Court can be easily found online). As the original label states, it has been ''rolled and worn by glacial action, that has, in turn, imparted a lustrous and appealing sheen to its surface. I suggest, from the discolouration of its lining paper and the fact that the collection as a whole (more items to follow) has integrity that the ''Three Nuns Tobacco tin has housed the axe head since the 1920s, if not before. By no means am I an expert in this field, and currently, my life does not allow me to immerse myself further in this absorbing subject, however, I cannot help but be drawn to small collections of artefacts with some provenance, and to briefly expe...
