FAQs

Butter stamps and prints were utilised from the 18th to the early 20th century by farms and dairies to brand butter pats with a distinct design or makers mark before sale.

They were typically hand-carved from dense, closed-grain hardwoods such as boxwood, beech, maple, or sycamore to prevent the butter from sticking and to withstand repeated washing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, natural timber shrinkage cracks, deep patination from handling and fats, and lack the machine-toothed precision of modern reproductions.

They can be displayed on small plate stands, grouped inside glazed cabinets, or arranged on open kitchen shelving to add historic texture and rustic charm to contemporary spaces.

Keep wooden items away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. Clean only with a dry or barely damp cloth, and occasionally nourish the timber with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax.
