Carved Wooden Chinese Window Panel Screen - 19th Century.

19th century
Description

This is a beautifully carved antique Chinese window panel or screen, once owned by the remarkable Dr Martin Crossley Evans, the long-serving warden of Manor Hall at Bristol University, and passionate collector of Oriental antiquities.

The intricate carving centres around a vase with a plume of flowers and foliage representing the life force that flows through every object, or 'Qi', also present are objects that are associated with the 'Hundred Antiques', a very popular design of the 1700's, and referring to a hundred items with special and significant spiritual meaning, celebrating life, piety, respect for ancestors and scholarly pursuits.

On this panel we can see a wealth of flowers and foliage, as well as a chess board and a stringed musical instrument, and a small bird foraging at the bottom of the frame.

The panel has been set into a more recent pine frame with a brass hook for displaying purposes. It looks fantastic, but does have the age related wear that you would expect from an item of this considerable age.

The framed panel measures 70cm high, 33cm across and 2.5cm deep.

Please have a look at the photographs, and if I can provide any more information or detail, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
