A torchere originally functioned as a stand to hold a torch or candle for illumination in large European interiors, later evolving into a decorative pedestal for sculpture, urns, or plants during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These stands are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently accented with inset marble tops, cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts, and delicate brass galleries.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned wooden components, genuine patination on the timber, and hand-chased metalwork rather than modern cast replacements.

A torchere serves well as an architectural accent in an empty corner, used to display a sculptural object, a cascading houseplant, or a small table lamp to add verticality to a room.

Maintain the piece by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, applying a quality beeswax to the timber periodically, and sealing the marble top against acidic spills.
