Description

Substantial item of agricultural historical significance comprising a double truckle cheese press with foundry castings marked “Wensley, Mark, Somerset”. Almost certainly purchased & originally used in the making of Somerset Farm Cheddar Cheese.

Believed to have been made circa 1890 at the local casting foundry run by Day of Mark (Somerset village) who were known for making intricate steel castings for the equipment made by Mr Wensley the highly reputed wheelwright based at the eastern end of the village opposite the church (from where an agricultural engineering business still operates).

In virtually untouched original condition the item is in fantastic condition for its age with only minor rot to the wooden feet where they stood on a stone floor for over 100 years, and the remains of a coat of cream paint on some of the metal work. The press is still operational with seven of its original removable boom lever weights remaining. Whilst it could be sand blasted & fully renovated we prefer its more authentic look as it stood in the local farm dairy from which we removed it.

One of its main features is the very detailed cast cross beam which depicts a milkmaid milking a cow, a group of cows laying down at pasture, a cow standing under a tree, a horse & trap (pony cart) by a tree, a collie dog & much more.

A fascinating piece of industrial/agricultural heritage suitable for creation of an interesting display or designer feature, ideal for a late Victorian period country TV or drama setting. Maybe even suitable for re-use in an artisan setting.
