Jason Clarke Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
Comprised of a two-part hinged fruit wood case with clasp lock to the side.
The lid is further engraved to the maker or retailer, B. Waldstein, Venezia.

Sadly, I can find nothing documented about Waldstein but nevertheless, a nice and unusual example of its type.
Please note that the thermometer is missing one of its brass stays at the top of the scale but the thermometer remains firmly held within the casing.
Circa 1890.
