Unusual Blue & White Canovian Statues Pattern Stand C1830

Description

This unusual ENGLISH BLUE & WHITE TRANFER PRINTED STAND, dating from around 1830, bears the Pattern Name 'CANOVIAN STATUES' to the base with the Maker's Mark H.B. & Co beneath.

This could either be the mark for Harvey, Bailey & Co of Lane End, Staffordshire Potteries (1833-5) or Henry Brown & Co of High Street, Lane End, Staffordshire Potteries (1828-1830).

The Pattern would seem to be inspired by the much-celebrated Italian Sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1827) who spent some time in Britain.

The potting of the Stand is quite sophisticated with very smooth, liquid glaze and a well-formed foot rim.

There are some minor grazes to the edge and nicks to the foot rim. There is no restoration.

Canovian pattern transferware refers to nineteenth-century British earthenware decorated with classical motifs, inspired by neoclassical themes and named in reference to the sculptor Antonio Canova.

It was manufactured by printing an engraved copper plate design onto thin tissue paper using cobalt blue ink, which was then transferred onto the unglazed ceramic body prior to glazing and firing.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit slight transfer print misalignments, soft wear to the unglazed foot rim, characteristic heavy earthenware weight, and period-appropriate printed or impressed maker marks.

These pieces can be displayed upright on wall-mounted plate racks, arranged as a gallery wall collection, or placed flat on sideboards and consoles as decorative focal points.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive pads, bleach, or dishwashers to prevent crazing and damage to the glaze.
