An Oxford University Carved Oak Book Rest By Rogers

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Culvertons

This finely carved adjustable book rest dates to the early part of the 20th Century and is decorated with Oxford University''s coat of arms - three crowns surrounding the motto Dominus Illuminatio Mea - ''the Lord is my light''. The book rest is in good original condition and the oak retains a pleasing mellow colour, however it would benefit from a nourishing wax, which it will receive before being sent to its new home. The reverse bears the stamp of Rogers, 51 High St., Oxford - James Rogers worked between 1880 & 1931 as a sculptor, craftsman in wood and heraldic artist. On his retirement, one or both of his sons (Edward 1877-1959 & Arthur 1880 - 1951) ran the business for a number of years. Extra measurement - average depth when open 25cm
