Antique Desvres French Faience Dish

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely, large, Early 20th Century Antique Desvres French Faience Dish from the atelier of the Fourmaintreaux family depicting a Breton couple standing beneath an heraldic shield emblazoned with the Arms of Brittany. Signed upon the reverse with the interlaced FE Maker's Mark in underglaze blue, together with the numeral 22, the footrim pierced for hanging. The piece also bears a barely legible upper case signature and date in underglaze puce, which inscription we have been unable fully to decipher, but which appears in part to date the piece to the early years of the century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French faience is tin-glazed earthenware ceramic produced in France from the late sixteenth century onwards. The technique uses a tin-based glaze to create an opaque white background, which is then painted with coloured metallic oxide pigments prior to firing.

The object is formed from terracotta or earthenware clay, given a initial firing, and dipped into a liquid glaze containing tin oxide. Artisans paint decorations directly onto the unfired glaze surface using specialized mineral paints before a final high-temperature kiln firing sets the glaze.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-painted brushwork, minor imperfections in glaze application, stippled or unglazed foot rims, and occasional small glaze chips exposing the clay body underneath. Many makers also applied hand-painted factory marks or initials to the underside.

Display the dish vertically on a plate stand inside a glazed bookcase, wall-mount it using a wire plate hanger, or lay it flat on a sideboard or coffee table as a decorative valet tray to add regional character to a room.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Avoid immersing cracked or crazed pieces in water, do not place in modern dishwashers, and keep away from sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent glaze stress.
