This French wall-mounted hook rack originates from the 1920 period in a French Chateau style, fashioned from gilt metal and wrought metal with a gold colour. The decorative piece showcases elaborate scrollwork, sculpted metal leaves, botanical leaves, and sculpted flower motifs alongside four curved scroll hooks along the bottom edge, terminating in open double-scroll finials at the base and sides. Measuring 55 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the structure incorporates wall hanging fittings on the back. It serves practically as a decorative coat or accessory holder beside the front door in a hallway or entryway, providing both utility and ornate botanical decoration for the interior space.

FAQs

Gilt metal wall racks became popular in mid-20th-century France, drawing heavy design influence from Rococo and neoclassical foliate motifs. Craftsmen fashioned metal into organic shapes such as vines, leaves, and flowers, finishing them with gold leaf or gilding paint to combine utility with decorative wall art.

These racks are primarily constructed from hand-wrought iron or sheet metal cut into intricate leaves and petals. The assembled metal frame is then soldered together and finished with gilding, lacquer, or metal leafing to achieve a gold lustre.

Authentic pieces feature structural hand-soldered joins, natural oxidation or wear to the gilded layer exposing underlying metal, and hand-bent wire or metal detailing rather than uniform modern machine-cast components.

Position the piece on a neutral painted wall to allow the gold metallic finish and intricate silhouettes to stand out. It functions well as a decorative coat rack in an entry hall, or as a jewellery display fixture in a bedroom or dressing area.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to clean around detailed floral leaves. Avoid liquid polish, abrasive scrubbers, or chemical cleaners, as these can strip away delicate surface gilding and lacquer finishes.
