This nineteenth-century console table follows an Arts and Crafts design attributed to George Faulkner Armitage for Morris and Co. Fashioned from mahogany wood, the piece displays a dark brown colour and a polished finish. The design incorporates a rectangular top with moulded edges, curved side supports connecting the upper structure to the lower section, and barley twist lower legs resting on shaped feet. Minor surface scuffs appear along the top edge of the timber. The practical table measures 73 cm high, 132 cm wide, and 68 cm deep, providing a substantial surface for display. In a modern interior, the console functions well as an entryway piece placed beside the front door to hold keys and mail, or positioned in a hallway to display decorative objects and table lamps. The lower shelf offers additional storage space for books or baskets, making the table adaptable for living rooms, dining spaces, or studies where traditional English country house character is desired.

Arts and Crafts furniture emphasizes honest construction, simple structural lines, and traditional hand-craftsmanship, often highlighting natural timber grain and functional joinery.

Solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut were primarily used, often featuring hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, sturdy stretchers, and wax finishes.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-cut joinery, visible construction details, solid timber backings or drawer linings, and an absence of modern synthetic varnishes.

Position the table in an entryway or living room paired with neutral wall tones, ceramic lamps, and simple decorative glassware to create a balanced contrast.

Keep the timber clear of direct heat sources and sunlight, dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to preserve the patina.
