A crystoleum is a Victorian photographic process popular in the late 19th century where an albumen print was pasted face-down onto convex glass, rubbed thin, treated with wax or oil to render it translucent, and then hand-coloured from behind.

Traditional crystoleums consist of a curved glass plate, paper photographic print, transparent oils or waxes, watercolour or oil paints applied behind the image, and a secondary glass backing sheet, often presented within a gilt wood frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit a characteristic depth and luminous quality due to the layered convex glass, visible hand-applied colour on the reverse, slight photographic sepia tones beneath, and appropriate age-related wear to the frame and backing.
