Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The depiction of Christ Pantocrator, meaning Almighty or All-Powerful, is one of the oldest and most central images in Eastern Christian art. Originating in the Byzantine Empire, the composition portrays Christ as the righteous judge and ruler of the universe, typically holding a gospel or orb while offering a gesture of blessing.

Nineteenth-century Russian icons were executed on solid timber panels, often seasoned lime or pine, coated with canvas and layers of gesso preparation. The figures were painted using natural earth pigments bound with egg yolk tempera, frequently finished with gold leaf highlights and protected by a drying oil varnish known as olifa.

Authentic period panel paintings exhibit natural craquelure throughout the paint layers and dark oxidisation along the unpainted timber borders. Structural indicators include rear wooden insertion slats, known as sponki, designed to prevent warping, along with authentic age wear and Cyrillic titling painted in traditional calligraphic scripts.

An antique icon serves as a focal point when displayed on a dark accent wall, inside a minimalist float frame, or set upon an easel within a library context. Combining historic devotional art with contemporary furniture creates an interesting contrast in modern or eclectic living spaces.

Preserving wooden icons requires maintaining a stable relative humidity to prevent the timber panel from warping or splitting. Avoid placing the painting in direct sunlight or near direct heat sources, and clean the surface gently using only a dry, soft camel-hair brush to remove accumulated dust.
