Papier-mache buttons were widely produced during the 19th century, particularly in English manufacturing centres like Birmingham. The material allowed makers to create lightweight, durable fasteners decorated with japanning, lacquer, gilding, and mother-of-pearl inlays.

Layers of paper pulp pressed into moulds were baked, dipped in linseed oil, and hardened. Once shaped, the surface was coated in asphaltum-based black lacquer, polished, hand-painted or gilded, and fitted with a metal shank on the reverse.

Authentic pieces are lightweight despite their dense appearance, exhibit a smooth lacquered finish, and typically feature embedded metal shanks or wire loops on the back rather than drilled holes.
