Antique Turkish Siirt Blanket, Rare White Ground, Circa 1920

Description

Size: 5ft 11in x 4ft 9in (180 x 145cm)

Antique Turkish 'Siirt' Blanket (battaniye).

Very rare white ground Angora Mohair blanket.

Circa 1910.

These blankets are made in the town of Siirt, in Turkey. They are a local tradition, woven on simple looms using Mohair wool from the local Angora goats. After weaving the face of the blanket is brushed with a steel comb to produce a very soft long pile.

These blankets make ideal throws for covering furniture or beds, they also make ideal hangings with their bold graphic design.

A superb old example with a very interesting medallion design.

Excellent condition.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.
