Walking Stick Corkscrew Brass Mechanical Gadget Cane

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Andrew Nethercott Antiques

Rare mechanical corkscrew walking stick, circa 1890.

Probably English, stag antler handle, malacca shaft and nickel and brass collars.

The shaft is held to the device by the corkscrew helix.

With the slide latch in the handle forward it can be screwed into the cork.

With the latch back the mechanical action engages as the handle is turned clockwise and the cork is pulled.

The mechanical pull is 1,1/4'' or 32mm, leaving the cork to be easily straight pulled at the end.

In good condition, reasonable action, all original and in good working order.

As with most corkscrew canes it is in my opinion, poorly conceived as a walking stick but ok as a corkscrew,

the Achilles heel being the handle held to the shaft by the corkscrew helix, having a tendency to undo although this one stays together well enough.

I have seen no other mechanical corkscrew canes.

Length 36,3/4'' or 93cm

Weight 530 grams
