The Fenghuang or Chinese Phoenix apart from the obvious connection to the Sun and fire represents loyalty, honesty and integrity. In some Chinese traditions it only stays when there is no darkness or corruption and hides during the bad times. Some believe it also appears at the start of a new era.
This one, with four long tail feathers is a female, as four is an even or yin number.
Deeply carved in relief, the stylized bird looks back while flying into clouds.
In excellent condition with no damage or repair, some black ink stains from use and doodlers outlining on the base of the bird.
Length 10,7/8" or 275mm, weight 105 grams.
