Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canton export sandalwood card case is a decorative pocket container crafted in southern China during the 18th and 19th centuries specifically for trade with European and American markets. These items were designed to hold personal visiting or calling cards and were noted for their dense, aromatic wood and elaborate high-relief carvings.

These cases were predominantly carved from fragrant sandalwood, ivory, tortoiseshell, or mother-of-pearl using specialized hand chisels and gouges. Craftsmen employed deep relief and undercut techniques to create multi-layered scenes containing human figures, traditional architecture, and native foliage within a compact wooden structure.

Authentic pieces feature crisp, hand-cut details with visible tool marks under magnification and natural variations in the wood grain. Genuine sandalwood retains a subtle, distinct scent over time and exhibits an aged patina with natural wear along the edges, slip lid joints, and prominent raised areas.

An antique card case can be displayed flat or on a small acrylic easel inside a glass cloche, shadow box frame, or atop a stack of design books on a desk or console. Its detailed woodwork pairs well with brass accessories, natural materials, and neutral table surfaces.

Sandalwood carvings should be kept in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Dust should be removed gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, oils, or chemical polishes that can darken or damage the porous wood.
