Dummy boards are flat, life-sized wooden cutouts painted to depict human figures, animals, or soldiers, popular in European interiors from the 17th through the 19th centuries. They were often placed near hearths, stairways, or empty rooms to create a trompe loeil presence of a companion or guard.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from solid timber planks, such as oak, pine, or elm, shaped with a jigsaw or hand saw. The surfaces are gessoed or primed and hand-painted in oils, often supported by a rear wooden strut or easel foot.

Authentication relies on examining the timber grain, hand-forged or early iron fixings, craquelure in the oil paint, and historical wear patterns along the base edges. Period pieces will show characteristic oxidisation, natural shrinkage, and hand-cut rather than modern machine-sawn edges.

These pieces function as striking sculptural artworks and are typically positioned against a plain wall, beside a fireplace hearth, or on a generous landing to create an element of historical whimsy and theatrical depth. Their flat profile allows them to fit neatly into transitional spaces without occupying floor space like traditional sculpture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent the wood from warping and the painted surface from flaking. They should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and cleaned only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth.
