An 18th/19th Century Finely Carved Mahogany Centre Table with Later Reconfigurements

19th century
Description

An 18th/19th century finely carved mahogany centre table with later reconfigurements

This table is extremely unusual and unique, probably originally the central section of an 18th century English padfoot table and then cleverly reconfigured into a carved centre table in the 19th century (circa 1860), the table now with low relief carved decoration influenced from 18th century designs of carved strapwork and foliate decoration such as the designs of Jean Berain.

This table consists of a shaped top with superb, crisp low relief carving of strapwork, foliate and floral decoration with textured background all creating a wonderfully decorative top leading down to a gadroon carved moulded edge.

Below is a shaped frieze with low relief foliate carved decoration leading down to tapered legs also with low relief foliate carving joined by a stretcher with carved central support terminating with low relief carved pad feet.

Over many years English furniture designers have been influenced by French designers such as Jean Berain, a French designer of ornament, his designs of low relief carved strapwork and leaf decoration were often seen on items of furniture of the 18th century, particularly on gilded tables, mirrors etc.

This table is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Centre tables emerged in the 18th century as prominent decorative items designed to be viewed from all angles in grand drawing rooms and foyers.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, employing hand-dovetailed joints and complex hand-carved relief work.

Authentic period pieces show subtle irregular tooling marks from hand carving, natural timber shrinkage over time, and original joinery techniques rather than modern machine cuts.

These tables function as central statement pieces in entrance foyers or placed within open-plan living rooms to display ceramics, books, or floral arrangements.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting with a soft lint-free cloth and applying beeswax occasionally, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
