French made, American carved ''penny knife'', circa 1780
Carved boxwood full figure female with tiny black glass trade beads eyes, seated on a geometric chip carving throne chair.
Apparently dressed in a diaphanous dress, with defined sleeves and neckline collar, revealing tiny carved nipples.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair, noting old fine stable hairlines adjacent to the bolster and some wear to her hair.
Length closed 3,3/4'' or 95mm, weight 26 grams

Inexpensive, French, folding knives, known as “penny knives”, were imported into Virginia and North Carolina.
Popular with soldiers and militiamen during the French and Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War.
It received the name penny knife for what it reportedly cost in England and America during the late 18th century.
