Early 18th Century Indian 'Toradar' Matchlock Musket.

This is a very nice Northern Indian Mughal 'Toradar' matchlock musket from c.1720.

The musket is decorated with silver panels, stock butt, ramrod pipes etc. etc.

It has a mahogany full stock and has the typical form and slender butt, a steel leaf shape trigger and is complete with a steel ramrod.

The musket has a bore of 16mm

A Toradar is a traditional matchlock musket used across the Indian subcontinent from the 16th to the 19th centuries, predominantly during the Mughal period. It features a long barrel attached to a slender wooden stock using leather, wire, or metal bands.

Toradar muskets were constructed using an iron or forged steel barrel, a dense hardwood stock, and metal or leather bindings. Brass, iron, or silver plates were frequently applied to reinforce the matchlock mechanism and stock butt.

Authentic Toradar muskets typically display a pentagonal or straight-sided stock cross-section, serpentine matchholders, and barrel attachment via external bands rather than wood pins. Look for period-appropriate oxidisation on metal components and hand-forged construction without modern machine screws.

A longarm musket can be mounted horizontally on custom metal wall brackets above a console table, mantelpiece, or within a library setting. Displaying the piece against a neutral or dark backdrop allows its elongated profile and hand-forged metal details to serve as a focal point.
