Description

Fine paper and ivory European fan, probably French, circa 1780

The paper leaves hand painted with charming scenes of Chinese people serving, attending and entertaining European ladies in pleasure gardens.

The ivory sticks and guards pierced, lightly carved and painted on the front with chinoisery subjects including a squirrel, a dove, figures and classical ornamentation.

One tortoiseshell pivot detail is chipped, otherwise all in excellent sound condition with no damage or repair, good and tight with little wear.

Length closed 11,1/4" or 285mm, weight 61 grams.
