18c Hand Painted Fan and Case European Chinoiserie Eventail Boxed

18th century
Description

Fine paper, 'chicken-skin' velum and tortoiseshell European fan, probably Dutch or English, circa 1760

Paper front leaf, the back leaf in velum, both pierced through with loops to attach the thin tapered sticks.

The paper leaf hand painted in Chinoiserie style with a lively scenes of Europeans.

Almost certainly a marriage fan, the splendid couple enter beneath a gorgeous scarlet parasol into an extravagent scene of noisy revelry.

Musicians with early wind instruments probably depicted playing a welcome or wedding anthem. Dancers and guests, in all their amazing exotic finery are starting to celebrate, whilst charming putti shoot arrows of love from tree top and rotunda.

This mid eighteenth century fashion for chocolate brown coloured backgrounds and fantastical mis-matched botanical sizes, parralel the soft furnishings of the wealthy elite, as can be found on embroidered bed hangings and hand sewn pictures of this period.

Some light wear to the edge of the leaf, one face has been rubbed and a scatter of perforations on the folds due to case wear, some edge and corner chips to the guards, otherwise all in good sound condition with no other damage or repair, reasonably tight with little general wear.

Length closed 11" or 278mm, weight 41 grams.

With the original lightly embossed, hand painted pasteboard case, some surface wear, the base end has been stitch repaired otherwise good and sound.

UK and EU only, includes free secure shipping

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
