Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Toleware originated in eighteenth-century Europe as painted or japanned sheet metal items, designed to imitate East Asian lacquerware. By the nineteenth century, these functional and decorative metal pieces were widely produced in England, France, and North America, frequently decorated with hand-painted botanical motifs and still life scenes.

Traditional toleware was constructed from thin sheets of iron or steel coated with tin to prevent rust, known as tinplate. These metal surfaces were primed, painted with oil-based paints or enamels, and sealed with layers of clear varnish or lacquer to protect the artwork.

Authentic nineteenth-century toleware displays characteristic signs of age, such as natural surface crazing, slight paint loss along exposed edges, and mild oxidisation on unpainted undersides. Original brushstrokes and hand-painted details are visible under close inspection, unlike smooth modern printed reproductions.

A painted toleware stand serves as a focal point when placed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside contemporary ceramic or glass accents. Its rich floral imagery adds depth and texture to neutral color schemes and traditional schemes alike.

Dust the item gently using a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents, as moisture can penetrate paint cracks and cause the underlying sheet iron to rust.
