This 19th Century standing statue depicts Buddha or a Hindu God, originating from the 19th Century Indian style. Carved from white stone alabaster, the figure displays red pigments showing through the white surface in places alongside minor surface wear, rubbing, and small nibbles. The hand-carved piece incorporates motifs such as elongated earlobes and hand-carved drapery, with a smooth finish on the upright form. The sculpture stands 36 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Suitable for display in a home interior, the figure fits well upon a sideboard top as part of a decorative arrangement. The white stone material and upright posture provide a focal point for collector displays, mantelpieces, or designated altar spaces within living areas or studies. Placement in rooms with neutral lighting allows the red pigments and hand-carved drapery details to remain visible against surrounding decor.

FAQs

During the 19th century, regional artisans in India crafted detailed alabaster and marble statues representing Hindu deities and Jain figures, primarily commissioned for domestic shrines or personal veneration.

Carvers predominantly utilised soft alabaster or dense marble, shaping the raw stone using hand chisels and abrasive compounds before polishing the surface to achieve a smooth finish.

Authentic period sculptures display subtle hand-carving irregularities, natural stone veining, consistent age wear along elevated surfaces, and an absence of modern machine-cut tool marks.

Position the sculpture on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or within an illuminated display alcove to contrast against minimalist backdrops and highlight the carved texture.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding water, chemical detergents, or abrasive cleaners that can damage porous alabaster.
