Description

Rare pair of elegant adjustable early nineteenth century pole-screens, with elaborately-shaped papier mache shields bearing hand-painted scenes of Haverfordwest Quay and High Street, with mother-of-pearl highlights, raised on slender japanned wooden poles rising from turned bases, terminating in three-cornered papier mache shaped plinths raised on bun feet, and decorated with gilt embellishments.

Attributed to Jennens and Betteridge, Birmingham (the leading manufacturer of this type of ware), circa 1840.

Excellent original condition, including the detailed paintings.

(Old repair to one base, one replaced finial, one loose brass ring).

Height: 54 inches; 137 cms.

Pole screens were designed to protect occupants faces from the direct intense heat of open hearth fires while sitting nearby. The adjustable panels allowed individuals to position the shield at face height without blocking heat from warming the rest of the room.

Papier-mache pieces from the 19th century were created by layering pressed paper sheets soaked in glue or paste, which were then baked, turned, and polished.
