Fascinating Japanese IVory Okimono Monkey Upon A Stag

Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this humorous Meiji period 1868-1912 , circa 1900 carved Ivory Okimono group depicting a Monkey riding upon the back of a recumbent Stag , the highly skilled Meiji period carver Gyokudo has rendered both animals in fine detail and with great humour, the Monkey has hold of a rope tied to the Stags antlers and appears to be relishing his ride , the Stag meanwhile looks slightly less content and resigned to the fact that the nuisance primate might give up in time , the carving is from a single chunky cut of Ivory with pegged but fixed Antlers , and is artist signed to the underside in a two character incised script that reads Gyokudo, a great addition to your Japanese Ivory Okimono collection and would make a wonderful gift for the collector in your life .
