Fine 19th Century French Samson Armorial Campana Vase – Famille Rose Chinese Export Style

19th century
Description

Overview

An exceptional and rare large-scale porcelain campana vase by the renowned Samson of Paris manufactory. Dating to the late 19th century, this piece is a masterclass in "historicist" art, flawlessly recreating the prestigious 18th-century Chinese Export (Compagnie des Indes) style that was prized by European aristocracy.

Design & Artistry

This neoclassical campana (bell-shaped) urn features a beautifully flared, everted rim and is set upon a traditional pedestal foot. The body is intricately hand-painted in the vibrant Famille Rose palette, featuring a central heraldic armorial crest (coat of arms) surrounded by delicate floral sprays and scrolls.

A standout feature is the pair of highly detailed Bacchic mask handles. These represent the god Bacchus and are adorned with hand-painted vine leaves and grapes, symbolizing abundance and celebration.

Condition & Provenance

The vase is presented in perfect, investment-grade condition, with no chips, cracks, or professional restorations—a remarkable find for a piece of this age and scale. The base features the authentic red pseudo-Chinese seal mark characteristic of the Edmé Samson factory, along with the "France" script mark.
