FAQs

Wemyss Ware is a renowned type of Scottish pottery first produced in the late 19th century at the Robert Heron & Sons Fife Pottery in Kirkcaldy, later moving to the Rosslyn Pottery in Scotland. It is celebrated for its distinctive hand-painted fruit, floral, and animal motifs executed in a lively, naturalistic style.

Wemyss pieces were typically crafted from a white earthenware body, which was hand-thrown or moulded before being decorated with underglaze or on-glaze painted designs. Artisans used vibrant, brush-stroked pigments to depict subjects like apples, roses, and cats, finished with a clear gloss glaze.

Authentic pieces often feature impressed factory marks, such as Wemyss or retailer stamps like T. Goode & Co., alongside hand-painted decorator signatures. The hallmark of genuine Wemyss is its fluid, unpretentious hand-painted artwork and characteristic crazing within the glaze over time.

This piece can be styled as a striking centrepiece on a dining table, filled with seasonal fruit or left empty to highlight its artistic surface. It pairs well with rustic wooden surfaces, neutral stone countertops, or traditional sideboards to introduce organic colour and historic charm.

To preserve antique ceramics, keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth and do not submerge in water if the piece exhibits extensive glaze crazing.
