Antique English Boulle Perpetual Calendar by Asprey, London

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A most unusual piece of exquisite Boulle in the form of a desk-top perpetual by the creme de la creme of London retailer's, Asprey of Bond Street, London.

The original cards from 1940 are still intact, this would have been the last year it had been used, the piece dates to around 1900. These cards can still be used today as a Perpetual calendar; for instance if 2nd of the month is a Sunday, you would use the card shown for June 1940, it is only this heading that would be incorrect. All the cards are present and all signed by Asprey.

The backing is top-notch which one would expect, made from polished Mahogany with a sliding panel which opens the back to change the card. I have also had a red velvet card made in case you would prefer to use as a photograph frame.

The Tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain into the very early 20th century.

Superb quality and condition measuring 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" x 3/4" with a glazed aperture measuring 4 3/8" x 4 3/8".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Boulle work perpetual calendar is a functional desk accessory framed using the marquetry technique developed in 17th-century France by Andre-Charles Boulle, involving cut brass inlaid into tortoiseshell or resin backgrounds. The perpetual element allows dates to be adjusted manually month by month.

Traditional pieces combine natural tortoiseshell backing with intricately cut brass scrollwork, framed around glass and printed card stock displays. The metallic inlays are carefully polished and fitted into precise cut-outs within the shell matrix.

Authentic period examples feature fine brass inlay flush with the surface, stamped retailer marks such as Asprey on the printed cards or frame reverse, and natural variations in colour and figure across the tortoiseshell frame.

Position the calendar on an executive desk, styled alongside brass paperweights, leather desk blotters, or contemporary stationery to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern functionality.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the tortoiseshell from drying out or warping. Lightly dust the surface with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid polishes that can react with the delicate inlaid metal.
